Research Interests

Interaction Design, Intelligent User Interfaces, Cognitive Decision Aiding, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Mental Workload, Graphical User Interfaces, Health Care, How Culture Influences, Informs, and Constrains Design.

Professional Experience

2003-present        Research Scientist                      Smart Information Flow Technologies
Proposed, won, and served as Principal Investigator for a research effort involving cultural training sponsored by the Army Research Laboratory. Served as technical lead, created experimental designs, defined system architectures, and designed user interaction. Managed research directions, oversaw implementation of the system prototypes, and authored technical reports.

2001-2002          Research Associate                     Honeywell Laboratories
Responsible for the design and implementation of the user interface of a $5.1M NIST-Honeywell joint research program, Independent LifeStyle Assistant (I.L.S.A.), for home automation in the elder-care domain. Fundamental in the design of the infrastructure of said system, and the analysis of field test data.

1996-1999          UI Designer/Human Factors        MGI Software/Roxio-Sonic Solutions
Designed and created User Interfaces for MGI Photosuite (Awards fromWindows Magazine, PC Photo, and named PC Computing 1999 MVP Award). Prototyped new systems that led to contract wins with Compaq, Microsoft, and Intel. Headed human factors efforts by conducting focus groups, collecting and analyzing data, and applying findings in implementation. Improved efficiency by creating and maintaining internal resource management systems. Trained new employees.
