Professional experience

Smart Information Flow Technologies—Chief Scientist (2001-present).  Chief responsibility for corporate reputation and technology directions, shared responsibility for hiring and business development.

Honeywell Technology Center—Research Fellow (1989-2001).  Proposed, won and managed multiple research efforts in advanced human/machine system design, adaptive and adaptable interfaces, and human performance modeling in diverse application domains. Directly responsible for $8M+ in external program awards. Managed research directions, budget, customer relations, team composition and training for 15+ projects.  Founded and led internal special interest group in task modeling with broad influence on center research directions.  Participated in Corporate and International advisory groups.  Developed sabbatical and mentoring programs for Honeywell engineers. 

University of Toronto, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering—Adjunct  Professor, (Honeywell-sponsored sabbatical, 1997-1998).  Co-wrote, won and managed a $C 500K university-industry collaboration effort for Canada’s NSERC.  Performed research with Dr. Kim Vicente to lay theoretical foundations and directions for this ongoing effort.  Taught human factors and interface design to graduate and undergraduate students.

·         H. W. Sweatt award, Honeywell’s highest honor for Technology Innovation, for work on the design of the Abnormal Event Guidance and Information System, February, 1999.

·         Best paper award, American Helicopter Society meeting, Montreal, 1999.

·         Honeywell approval for patent application for “Computer System for Dynamically Managing User Interface Using Context Information”.

·         3 Honeywell Technology Center Initiative Awards

·         Honeywell Technology Center Team Award, 1996, for work on the Cockpit Information Manager for the Rotorcraft Pilot’s Associate.

·         Honeywell Technology Center Individual Award, 1994, for work on interface design for the Combat Vehicle Commander’s Helmet-Mounted Display.

·         Honeywell Sensors and System Development Center Team Achievement Award, 1991, for work on a electrical turbine expert system. 

·         Emerging Systems Concepts Best Paper Award, AUTOTESTCON, 1992.

·         National Science Foundation Fellow, Behavioral Sciences, University of Chicago,1985-1988.

·         Graduated cum laude, with Psychology Dept. Prize, Pomona College, Claremont, CA, 1985.
